East Sound is the first one-sided vinyl production from the maker(s) of Monolith Magazine and The Abstract Series. Environmental recordings from the far northeast. This record is laced with delicate and robust cadences, soothing, horrifying, outcast in its hidden forgottenness. These are the diamonds in the rough, from a recorder maxed out on ocean sounds, seagull cries, malfunctioning machines, quiet haunting lulls, rainstorms, a cautious harbor warning the seafarers. A record for the contemplative adventurer, the armchair traveler, the restless, the seekers, those estranged from the sea, those familiar with the sea, the landlocked, the waterlogged, the masses hungry for respite. This record is multi-purpose, beneficial to mind expansion exercises. MONOLITH MAGAZINE PRESENTS: The Abstract Series Issue 3
The Abstract Series has completed the third issue in a series of private amateur cosmos cartographer outlines, diagrams, and sketches. What is hinted at in these pages is a vague decoding of the outer limits, a daily struggle with the unknown, a mind lost in the surrealist activities of alien terrain. Warning to the viewer: do not use these cosmos atlases as actual maps – you will get lost. Our cartographer, though familiar and comfortable with her otherworldly surroundings, is acquainting with and reporting from a universe (multiverse?) of different dimensions. No longitude/latitude in other words. Forget lightyears, gravity, certainly units of measurement, even cellular makeup. Our cosmos cartographer is preparing us for a deeper dive, the progression in her series has been strange and luminous, although symbiotically murky. The second round of collected data from the amateur cartographer of the cosmos. This issue, unlike the first, features opposites, then the parallel conjectures, outlined by the minute fragments between darkened points in space, which are also the contents of the unconscious. The process of succumbing to such alien, confusing terrain led to these, the contents of the collection, portraits of the unfathomable spectres of some mysterious and haunted otherworld (which are portraits of the inner world, thus an interexistence between space and the mind). What emerges is a slow processional toward a union between both the random and the pure emotion and gut of whatever space/mind matter, which creates a map toward the meaning which is the looming undercurrent found in anything. Collection of ten drawings. Individually stitched covers, stitched binding. 8.5″x11″, black and white. Numbered and signed edition of 20. Artist’s personally selected musical soundtrack. $15 ppd. The Abstract Series Issue 1 features ten drawings by Kathleen Hensley, all completed in mixed settings, which may account for the geometrically intricate collage of patterns. It’s akin to the scales in a musical composition, more specifically, the visual tracings of Anthony Braxton’s raw mental state. What the viewer will find here is a map to the unconscious: you will not, however, find a trace of directions. This is less a guidebook for the subconscious dwellers than it is the raw collected data from an amateur cartographer of the cosmos. Roberto Bolaño said the Spanish language was his homeland. James Joyce’s Stephen Dedalus declares in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, “I will tell you what I will do and what I will not do. I will not serve that in which I no longer believe whether it call itself my home, my fatherland or my church: and I will try to express myself in some mode of life or art as freely as I can and as wholly as I can, using for my defence the only arms I allow myself to use–silence, exile, and cunning.” Later, in Ulysses, Dedalus deduces to Leopold Bloom, “I suspect that Ireland must be important because it belongs to me.”
